CapCut Eats Up Storage Space on Windows PCs

If you use CapCut on a Windows PC, you may have noticed your storage quietly disappearing over time. The culprit is often a folder most users never think to check: A C:\Users\[username]AppData\Local\CapCut\Apps. Here’s what’s happening and how to fix it.

Why CapCut Eats Up So Much Disk Space

Every time CapCut updates itself, it installs the new version into a fresh subfolder inside the Apps directory — but it doesn’t remove the old ones. Each version folder is a complete copy of the application, typically weighing in at around 1.5GB. If you’ve had CapCut installed for a while and let it update automatically, it’s common to find multiple old version folders sitting there doing nothing.

This is something we recently saw on a few client machines around Oxford and Oxfordshire

How to Clean It Up

The fix is straightforward, but do follow these steps carefully:

  1. Close CapCut completely. Check Task Manager to make sure no CapCut processes are still running in the background.
  2. Open the Apps folder. Press Win + R, type %LocalAppData%\CapCut\Apps and hit Enter.
  3. Identify the current version. Sort the folders by Date Modified — the most recently modified folder is the one CapCut is actively using.
  4. Delete everything else. All older version folders can be safely removed.
  5. Empty the Recycle Bin, then relaunch CapCut to confirm everything still works.

Will It Come Back?

Unfortunately, yes. CapCut has no built-in option to clean up old version folders automatically, so they’ll accumulate again after each update. The best approach is to make this a quick routine check every few months — particularly if you notice your free disk space shrinking unexpectedly.
